The Story Behind the Silence: Why I Wrote ‘The Quiet Storm’

Every story starts with a whisper.

For ‘The Quiet Storm’, that whisper began when I was thinking about situations and circumstances from my own childhood.

I couldn’t shake the image of Andy as a teenage boy not having the physical ability to stop the abuse that was happening to his mother. I realized that I wanted to explore a theme that we often ignore in polite society: when justice is left in the hands of a child.

Writing this novella was a journey of emotional healing. One of the hardest scenes to write was the first physical altercation between Andy and Randy because it felt too real.

My hope is that when you read The Quiet Storm’, you don’t just see a story about a family in trouble. I hope you see that survival shapes morality. Right and wrong blur when someone grows up in damage.
